In an effort to simplify my life, I’m thinking about going to Zotero exclusively and dropping delicious. To do that, I want to see whether there is a way to take an XML file out of my delicious account and import it in some reasonably unmessy way into my Zotero library. Wish me luck.
Also on my to-do list for this week. Let’s see who gets there first!
Here’s where I am so far. Delicious exports bookmarks as HTML and the tags seem to have been lost in the translation. Then I remembered that I’ve been using Backupify for various services. Backupify gave me my delicious account in XML. Then I found Bibutils, free software that helps you convert files in various ways so they can be used in bibliographic utilities (such as citation managment tools like Zotero). I installed the Bibutils software but can’t figure out how to get it to do anything (it works at the command line). I can see that software will convert XML into RIS, a format that RIS can ingest, but I’m not sure how to make that happen in the software. It also looks like I may first massage the XML into some modified XML. I have a feeling I’m going to have to learn about XSLT first just to get the XML file into shape for the software. So, a seemingly simple task has morphed into a bunch of DIY projects.
This is starting to sound like a learning module for the DIY project!
Did you ever work out a way to export your delicious bookmarks to Zotero? I’m working on the same issue right now.
Crystal, I am afraid that I didn’t.
I’ve also been working on this and came up with a (very basic) solution, which I put up at http://stevenccherry.appspot.com. Hopefully it will work for you, or if it doesn’t I would appreciate feedback.
